28 of the best USA Junior Volleyball teams in Iowa in volleyball will descend upon Central Iowa this weekend, and more than 300 teams play the first two weekends in April.

Hosted by Iowa Volleyball Region, the Iowa affiliate of USA Volleyball, these Spring tournaments determine who earns an invite to play at the 2017 Girls Junior National Championships (June 25 – July 4, Minneapolis, Minn.) and who goes home.

The weekend of March 18 – 19 will be for the oldest of the Junior division, 17- and 18-year-old players. Twenty-eight elite teams will participate in both pool and bracket play on Saturday and Sunday. One will emerge as the victor, taking the bid to Nationals home with them.

“Nationals, as well as Regionals, are important to these girls looking to make a case for college

scholarships,” said Lynne Updegraff, Iowa Volleyball Region Commissioner. “For the older girls, it’s one last chance to show coaches what they’re made of.”

Pool play begins on Saturday in Grimes at 8 a.m. Two venues will be used with multiple courts in each location. The Ohana Sports Complex and Ignit Sports and Fitness will each have multiple courts set up to allow each team several opportunities to play through the weekend.

The first weekend in April, more than 200 teams will take over five different venues for tournament play of players ages 12 through 18. Locaions will include both venues in Grimes as well as the Varied Industries Building, Knapp Center at Drake and the Wellness Center at Grandview University.

The following weekend nearly 200 teams will occupy four locations, including the two in Grimes plus Drake and Cowles Fieldhouse at Simpson College in Indianola. Boys will be included on Saturday for each age group, 12-, 14-, 16- and 18-year old players.
